About The Indie Digest

Welcome to The Indie Digest, my thoughts and ideas on the future of media and the music industry.

 About Owen

My name is Owen Kelly, I'm an Australian blogger here at The Indie Digest. I've had my head in the music industry and seen it begin changing since the turn of the millenium.

I dabble in Logic, play both electric and acoustic guitar. I also have a maraca made from a WWII bullet casing and some resistors, it sounds pretty sweet.

Anyway I'm just as keen as you are to discover where the industry is headed, and how small independent bands can survive.

I'm also staying in the thick of the Melbourne music scene writing reviews for FasterLouder.com.au. If you're on there add me.

Goals

We all know the music media industry is changing, however no one knows for sure what its morphing into. This current musical renaissance is an exciting and challenging time to be an artist.

This blog started as my playground to entertain new music marketing and production ideas. It has since grown and broadened, just like my own interests to include all interactive and online media.

Free Culture

I license all the content contained in the blog under a Creative Commons 3.0 Attribution license. I take care to make sure all the photos you see along with each post fall under a similar license. There are two main reasons for this.

Firstly, attributing your sources helps in tracing the lineage of an idea. It also builds reputation for the creator. So content itself, doesn't have a monetary value, rather a repetitional one. Good ideas, build reputation for the person who filtered and created a new idea.

Secondly, and perhaps most importantly, the CC 3.0 license is that anyone is freely allowed and encouraged to share and adapt the work. Commercial or non-commercial is irrelevant. If you want to share or adapt the work, you are encouraged to do so.

In a field such as this, one where we are litrallly discuss about the future of an entire industry (perhaps multiple) the nessecity to share and collaborate on ideas is paramount to the creation of new and better ones.

So, go forth and help discuss this intriguing field of debate. Share ideas, excerpt posts, debate them. Attribution is the only request, if only so the reader can know the context of the excerpt.

Everything I say on this blog is either backed up with sources from people who have succeeded using these methods, or based on keen observation. As well as industry experts who just like you and me are searching for the new industry model.

If you are unsure about anything, leave a comment. I welcome anyone to challenge any ideas presented. If I'm wrong or missed something, I'm more than willing to admit it.

Having said that, understand you career is ultimately in your control. Whether or not your agree (and this goes for every facet of our industry);

Question Everything.

Don't take anything for face value. The industry is changing, no one is 100% sure where it is headed.

This blog is primarily designed to employ debate about where the industry is headed.
